Opine or Otherwise

Opinions and intellectual conversations are over-rated. The fuss about seeking stimulating conversations is mostly a yearning for a platform and an audience to expound one's beliefs. There is barely any listening. The self loves to hear its jokes , the conviction in its voice and think of itself as particularly clever.
"I think, therefore I am and I dont really care about the other persons etre as long as my raison de etre has a voice" -That seems to be the flavour of the season.
Its infinite and dull, yet people are enraptured, here is a person who thinks, what defines thinking though is elusive- Is it rattling off facts from the morning read of a newspaper? Is it forming an opinion in ignorance? Is it rigid and unyielding?
Under influence of certain books (everyone claims to be a book lover nowadays), in the influence of witty sitcoms and even wittier newspaper columns, Are sensibilities stuck in limbo? The word pseudo comes to mind.

well Ill say there are ppl who think, and then there are people who Think!! Its similar to our concept of Good CP and DCP in classes... a true thinker is one who maintains his silence unless what he has to speak is absolutely essential to th conversation at hand.

What say?

Hmm interesting to bring up the DCP and CP example. Totally apt, but its easier said than done, the whole "silence till relevant" policy.
Actually the popular premise seems to be "Relevant till proven otherwise".

The "Relevant till proven otherwise" premise is sound if we assume that the majority does not think for itself, which is definitely the case in most places... but it does tie in with the CP theory because it is only when some good CP comes along that the majority awakens and goes "Hmmm... now why didn't we think of that??"

That is well thought out opinion about opinions. I know that the writer is an MBA..it seems that she has stayed away from the pack..its the b school grads whom i find have the deepest need to opine and rattle of facts..but all in all a good article..cheers

Heh.

Reminds me of this mailing list called "Silk-list" on yahoogroups. The list traffic is archived publicly, so you should be able to find it easily enough. The objective of the list is to have "Intelligent Conversation". You should check out the archives *at leisure* some time. Without prejudices or preconceived ideas.
